1. BASIC SURVEY
Definition, principle of survey, types of survey, object of survey, scale
of survey, Reconnaissance of survey, Scale of survey.
2. HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY
Definition, Sounding, equipments for Hydrographic Survey, Echo
Sounder, Duties of a Hydrographic Surveyor, Methods of locating soundings,
The instruments using for position fixing, Sounding datum and chart datum
etc.
3. DRAWING INSTRUMENTS AND SCALES
Drawing board, T square, Set square etc., Lettering, Dimension, Type
of scales, Plain scale, diagonal scale.
4. COMPUTATION OF VOLUME
Formulae for Area calculation and Volume calculation, Dredging,
quantity of dredging material.
5. LEVELLING
Definition, types of levels, Levelling staff, adjustment of level, bench
mark, MSL, Reduction of levels, Collimation system, Rise and fall system,
Arithmetical check, error in levelling, contouring etc.
6. THEODOLITE
Part of Theodolite, levelling of Theodolite, measurement of angles,
traverse.
7. DRAFTSMANSHIP
Plotting of sounding and coast lining, use of station pointer,
preparation of rough and fair charts, duties of Draughtsman, leveling in
charts, Cartography.
8. GEODESY & ASTRONOMY
Figure of earth, Geoid and spheroid, nautical mile, latitude and
longitude, projections, grid, zone etc.
9. TIDE
Formation of tide, kinds of tide, tidal forces, tide measurement, tide
guage, tidal graph, Neap tide, Spiry tide, Tide correction in sounding;
10. MODERN SURVEY INSTRUMENTS
GPS, DGPS, Total station, Smart Station, use of GPS and DGPS in
Hydrographic Surveying.

NOTE: - It may be noted that apart from the topics detailed above, questions from other topics prescribed for the educational qualification of the post may also appear in the question paper. There is no undertaking that all the topics above may be covered in the question paper.
