1   . (a)  Properties of fluids
Importance of hydraulic fluids.  Density, specific weight, specific
volume.  Specific gravity,  Capillarity,  Surface tension etc..
(b). Fluid Pressure and its measurements:   Atmospheric pressure,
Gauge pressure, Vacuum pressure,  Pressure measuring instruments.
Flow through pipes – Steady Flow, Unsteady flow, Laminar – Turbulent
flow.  Continuity equations.  Flow measuring instruments, Bernoullis
theorem.  Losses in Pipe flow.  Major losses.  Minor losses.
   2.    (a)  Hydraulic System
Basic elements of hydraulic system.  Types of pumps.
Control Valves – Function of Control Valves – Classification of Control
Valves –Types of Control Valves – Flow control valves,  Direction
control valves.  Check valves.  Non return valve etc.  Seals and packing
– Filters
(b). Pneumatic System :  Advantages of pneumatic system.  Basic
components.  Filter, Regulator, Lubricators  (FRL Units)

Lead acid cell – Charging – Discharging – Rating of Battery,
Maintenance etc.  Principle of AC Circuits – Single Phase, Three Phase
connection.  Phase difference.  Power and power factor, working
principles of AC and DC generators, Motors and its applications.

Classification of IC engines – two stroke/four stroke engine –

IC engine components – Fuel pump injector, Carburettor.    Basic ideaabout – Clutches, Brake, Gear Box, Differential etc.

Shafts – power transmitted by the shafts, keys and couplings – types of

ratio, advantages and disadvantages of belt and chain drives.  Gear

7.   Refrigeration and Air-conditioning
Law of thermodynamics – define the term like temperature, pressure,
latent heat, sensible heat, critical pressure, enthalpy, entropy etc.
Define refrigeration, C O P, units of refrigeration.  Advantages of
refrigeration.  Application of refrigeration.   Important types of
refrigerant   - properties,  understand the vapour compression
refrigeration and vapour absorption refrigeration system,  Industrial air
conditioning, comfort air conditioning.
